In Latgale, a drone with explosives crossed the Latvian border unnoticed and exploded in Lake Dridzis — the deepest lake in the country. The incident has raised questions about drone detection systems and how prepared border residents are for such threats.

Saturday morning at Lake Dridzis in the Kraslava region began not with relaxation, but with the work of police, rescuers, and military personnel. A drone equipped with explosives fell into the lake and exploded. The incident was reported to law enforcement by a local resident who witnessed the explosion, reports TV3 News.

The signal to the police was received at 7:53 AM, and within half an hour, operational services were working at the scene.

According to Gundars Trops, the head of the Latgale Regional Department of the State Police, the drone fell approximately 150 meters from the shore.

“Dridzis is the deepest lake in Latvia, and the depth at the incident site is sufficient — between eight and ten meters. We are collecting evidence; some debris has already been found,” he noted.

The search for fragments is complicated by the depth of the lake. Until the debris is fully examined, the services cannot accurately determine which specific aircraft crossed the Latvian border.

Particular concern arises from the fact that residential houses and recreational areas are nearby. On the shore of the lake, journalists met a family building a summer house there.

“Right now, there is no fear, but if something else flies in — then it will be scary, then we will gather and leave,” the man admitted.

The incident at Dridzis serves as another reminder of how close the war in Ukraine has come to the Baltic states. In recent days, residents of Latgale have received several warnings about potential aerial threats.

For some people, this is already affecting their daily lives. One schoolboy reported that due to the threat of drones, his Latvian language exam was postponed.

“We hid in the wardrobe — that’s the lowest place to take shelter,” he said.

On social media, residents posted videos from the scene. In one of them, a fisherman shows a piece of the drone and fish that surfaced after the explosion.

At the same time, on Saturday, residents of the Kraslava region did not receive warnings through the cellular alert system. The National Armed Forces explained that there was insufficient sensor data to confirm the threat.

“To make a decision to send such a message, we need more than one confirmation,” stated Maris Tutin, head of the Analysis and Information Management Department of the Joint Staff of the National Armed Forces.

According to him, the drone likely flew very low, making it difficult to detect. Currently, systems are being improved, and the incident is already being called an important lesson for security services.

The incident at Lake Dridzis has shown that aerial threats to the Baltic states are no longer an exclusively theoretical scenario.
