"The IAEA is closely monitoring the developments in the Middle East and calls for restraint to avoid any threats to nuclear safety for the population of the region," the agency wrote. It added that it is in constant contact with the countries in the region and will continue to inform about the situation.
Iran and Russia Request IAEA Board of Governors Meeting
Meanwhile, Iran's permanent mission to international organizations in Vienna has requested an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors. "In light of the ongoing aggression by the U.S. and Israeli regimes, which began on February 28, the mission in Vienna called in a letter to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi for an urgent extraordinary meeting of the agency's Board of Governors," the message on the mission's page on X states.
Russia has also requested to hold a special meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors on Monday, March 2, before the session scheduled for that day. This was reported on X by Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna.
Russia Calls on IAEA and UN to Assess Actions of the U.S. and Israel
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously called on the IAEA and the UN to assess the "irresponsible actions aimed at undermining peace, stability, and security in the Middle East."
Russia and China initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the strikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iran. According to the Russian mission to the UN, it will take place on February 28 at 16:00 New York time.
