Bulgaria wanted to issue a commemorative 2 euro coin in honor of the Bulgarian alphabet, but this decision was blocked by one of the Eurozone member states.

The coin was planned to be put into circulation in the second half of 2026. However, one of the states raised an objection to its design, Bulgarian media report.

The project features a design that includes a composition of Cyrillic letters and the inscription "Bulgarian Alphabet" to commemorate Bulgaria's contribution to Cyrillic as the third official alphabet of the European Union. The designers are Svitlin Balezdrov and Stoyan Derchev.

At this time, it is unknown which member state raised the objection and what its motives are, as the relevant document has not yet been made public. Claims circulating on social media regarding a specific country have not been confirmed by official sources.

Bulgaria submitted for approval a project for a commemorative 2 euro coin with the inscription "Bulgarian Alphabet" on May 19, 2026, but subsequently received an objection from a Eurozone state, the name of which has been removed from public documents. In the public version of the document, the name of the country is crossed out.

Despite this, subsequent numismatic catalogs, specialized publications, and the program of the Bulgarian National Bank continue to list the coin as planned for release in the second half of 2026 with a mintage of 1 million units.

Cyrillic was officially recognized as the third alphabet of the European Union after Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007, alongside the Latin and Greek alphabets.
