If the U.S. carries out its military threats and strikes, American bases, facilities, and assets will become "legitimate targets," said Iran's ambassador to the UN Amir Said Iravani in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, LETA reports citing AFP.

Currently, negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are ongoing to limit Tehran's nuclear program. Pressuring Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a group of American warships to the Middle East and stated that he is considering the possibility of a military strike.

In a letter from an Iranian diplomat, a post by Trump published on social media on Wednesday is cited, in which he indicated that the U.S. may have to use British military bases, including one on an island in the Indian Ocean, "if Iran decides not to reach an agreement."

"Such a belligerent statement from the U.S. president signals a real risk of military aggression, the consequences of which would be catastrophic for the region and pose a serious threat to international peace and security," noted Iravani.

He urged the UN Security Council to "ensure that the U.S. immediately ceases its illegal threats of the use of force."

The letter states that Iran still intends to "find diplomatic solutions" and "mutually clarify uncertainties regarding its peaceful nuclear program."

However, Iravani warned that in the event of military aggression against Iran, "all bases, facilities, and assets of hostile forces in the region will become legitimate targets in the context of Iran's defensive response."

On Thursday, Trump stated that Iran has no more than 15 days to reach an agreement and again allowed for the possibility of a strike by the U.S. if this does not happen.

After negotiations between Iran and the U.S. in Geneva on Tuesday, a senior Iranian diplomat stated that progress had been made.

The previous attempt at negotiations failed after Israel struck Iran last June, initiating a 12-day war, which Washington briefly joined to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities.
