Coming Soon to Europe? What is Known About the Extremely Dangerous Nipah Virus

Experts say that Nipah is more dangerous than COVID-19 and has a high mortality rate. They note that the virus could reach those countries in Europe that have regular connections with India.

In India, in the state of West Bengal, an outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has been recorded. Five cases of infection have been confirmed, including among healthcare workers. About one hundred people have been placed under quarantine, and the infected have been hospitalized in hospitals in Kolkata, with one patient in critical condition.

Authorities are taking prompt measures to contain the spread of the virus. Nipah is considered one of the most dangerous pathogens for which there is no cure. The carriers can be bats, as well as contaminated fruits.

The Nipah virus is more dangerous than COVID-19 and has a high mortality rate. This warning was issued by Doctor of Medical Sciences Murad Shahmardanov. The expert noted that the virus can be transmitted to humans from bats, pigs, and from person to person. The main areas of risk, according to the professor, are the countries of South and Southeast Asia (Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Singapore).

The main threat of Nipah, according to the specialist, is its extremely high lethality: from 40 to 75 percent. The doctor reminded that there is still no vaccine. According to the expert, the disease can be asymptomatic but can also lead to fatal encephalitis. "Survivors often experience persistent neurological disorders: personality changes, seizures," he explained.

It was previously reported that India recorded the first fatal case from the new virus. According to media reports, there is currently no vaccine for the disease, and it is transmitted in the same way as COVID-19.
