The chief advisor to the Lithuanian president on national security, Deividas Matulionis, says that the situation with smuggled meteorological probes from Belarus has significantly improved, but it is premature to state that the crisis is over.

“As of today, we cannot say with one hundred percent certainty that this is a sustainable process and that there will be no more of these probes at the airport; let’s wait a bit longer, but the situation has significantly improved,” said Matulionis on Tuesday during a broadcast on Ziniu radijas.

According to him, the smuggled probes from Belarus have not posed problems for Lithuanian authorities and officials for 45 days.

In Matulionis' opinion, this could be due to several reasons: the more active work of law enforcement agencies, weather conditions, as well as the conversation between U.S. envoy John Cole and the authoritarian leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.

The BNS agency reported that Cole announced after the mentioned meeting in December that the Belarusian dictator promised to stop the launches of smuggled probes into Lithuania.

Due to the meteorological probes, the operation of Vilnius Airport was disrupted more than ten times in the second half of last year, and the schedule of Kaunas Airport was disrupted once.
