Berse: US actions in Greenland could undermine transatlantic ties.
The actions of the USA regarding Greenland could undermine transatlantic ties. This was warned by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berse, in his article for The New York Times (NYT).
"When Europe insists on sovereignty and accountability, it is not posturing. It is defending what makes America and Europe strong. Ignoring this creates a dangerous precedent that could undermine transatlantic ties and weaken the foundations on which we stand," the text states.
Berse emphasized the Council of Europe's readiness to support Denmark and Greenland "through specific legal and institutional cooperation." He added that it is not only about sovereignty but also about the trust of allies in Washington.
"If international law can be discarded when it becomes inconvenient, trust evaporates. If strategic calculations lead to the disregard of Greenland's sovereignty, how can Europe continue to trust the USA elsewhere?" he wrote.
