In 2025, China's GDP increased by 5%. However, internal problems affected the Chinese economy, rather than trade wars with the US.

In 2025, China recorded an economic growth of 5 percent. This was reported on Monday, January 19, by the National Bureau of Statistics of China. According to preliminary estimates, China's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025 amounted to 140.18 trillion yuan (approximately 17.3 trillion euros).

In recent years, China - the second-largest economy in the world - has faced systemic economic problems that hinder economic growth, notes AFP. In particular, individual consumption has significantly declined, and there is a crisis in the real estate sector (investments in this sector of the economy decreased by 17.2%).

According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, retail sales in December 2025 grew by only 0.9% compared to the same period last year. This is the slowest growth since the lifting of coronavirus restrictions in the country nearly three years ago.

The Trade Dispute Between Beijing and Washington Had Little Impact on the Country's Economy

Earlier, China announced a record trade surplus for 2025, which amounted to 1.2 trillion US dollars (1.03 trillion euros). As AFP notes, exports are considered the traditional driving force of the Chinese economy.

At the same time, the trade dispute between Washington and Beijing, which led to the temporary imposition of mutual tariffs, resulted in a 20% decline in imports to the US. In comparison, imports from the US to China decreased by 14.6%.

The decline in exports to the United States in 2025 was compensated by supplies to Southeast Asian countries (up 13.4%), Africa (25.8%), and the European Union (8.4%).
