Representatives of the Democratic Party in the U.S. Congress will block President Donald Trump's tariffs against European countries over Greenland. This was stated by the leader of the Democrats in the U.S. Senate, Chuck Schumer, as reported by The Hill.
"It’s incredible that he wants to double down on his foolishness by imposing tariffs on our closest allies for his quixotic attempt to seize Greenland," the politician said.
Schumer announced the introduction of a bill in the Senate aimed at preventing the imposition of tariffs against several European countries and to avert "further harm to the American economy and our allies in Europe." The senator called Trump's tariff policy reckless and accused him of exacerbating the economic situation in the country.
On January 17, Trump announced the imposition of 10 percent tariffs against several European Union (EU) countries as a measure due to the situation surrounding Greenland. The tariffs will affect Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, as well as the United Kingdom and Norway, which are not part of the EU.
Earlier, The Economist suggested to the European Union the weak points of the U.S. for a strike in the event of a Greenland takeover. It was specified that certain leverage could also come from U.S. military bases in Europe.
