The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, in a private conversation with leaders of political groups in the European Parliament, admitted that the global situation has become too oppressive. According to Politico, Kallas ironically noted that now is a “good moment” to start drinking.
The remark was made during an informal conversation when Members of the European Parliament congratulated each other on the New Year. According to two sources present at the meeting, Kallas emphasized that she is usually indifferent to alcohol, but the scale of global problems compels a reassessment of habits.
Kallas's irony did not come from nowhere. While congratulations were exchanged in Brussels, representatives from Denmark and Greenland were engaged in difficult negotiations with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The central theme was the renewed discussions about Donald Trump's claims on Greenland. Against the backdrop of debates about security in the Arctic and the unpredictable policies of the new U.S. administration, Kallas's joke appears more as a bitter acknowledgment of a new political reality.
