A new generation of drones challenges the Kremlin.

Ukraine is actively using new cheap interceptor drones to protect cities and critical infrastructure from Russian drone attacks. These are domestic systems that have progressed from prototypes to mass production in just a few months and have already become an important part of Ukraine's air defense, writes the Associated Press.

During night shifts, mobile groups set up antennas, sensors, and control points, preparing new weapons for operation. One such interceptor is the Sting, which resembles a "flying thermos". It was created by the Ukrainian startup Wild Hornets with the support of volunteers.

The commander of the unit with the callsign "Loy" says that these drones can effectively counter Russian kamikaze drones, which have become faster and started flying at higher altitudes.

"Every destroyed target is something that did not hit our homes, our families, our power plants. The enemy does not sleep, and neither do we," he emphasized.

Betting on Mass Production and Cost

Constant night attacks have forced Kyiv to rethink its air defense approach. Instead of using a limited number of expensive missiles, Ukraine is betting on mass production of inexpensive systems. The cost of one such interceptor starts at around $1,000.

In addition to Sting, another model called Bullet is being developed by the startup General Cherry. According to strategic council member Andriy Lavrenovych, these drones destroy enemy targets worth between $10,000 and $300,000.

"We are inflicting serious economic damage," he noted.

Race for Innovation

Russia continues to rely on Iranian kamikaze drones of the "Shahed" type, releasing new modifications with jammers, cameras, and even turbojet engines.

"In some areas, they are a step ahead. In others, we find innovative solutions, and they suffer because of it," Lavrenovych said.

Analyst Federico Borsari from the Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington believes that cheap interceptors have become a key element in modern drone warfare.

"They have gained significance so quickly that they can already be considered a cornerstone of counter-drone systems. They are changing the cost and scale dynamics of air defense," the expert explained.

At the same time, he warns that such drones are not a panacea: their effectiveness depends on sensors, command systems, and operator training, as well as integration with other air defense means.
