AFP: Saudi Arabia sets a record for the number of death sentences. Earlier, tourists were warned that swearing in Saudi Arabia could lead to criminal charges.

In 2025, Saudi Arabia set a record for the number of executions carried out, executing 340 people. This was reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

According to the Saudi Ministry of Interior and the state news agency SPA, since the beginning of 2025, the majority of individuals (232 criminals) were executed for drug trafficking. On Monday, December 15, the Ministry of Interior announced that death sentences against three individuals in a murder case were carried out in the Mecca province.

As noted by the agency, Saudi Arabia has set a record for the number of executions for the second consecutive year. In 2024, 338 people were executed in the kingdom.

Analysts explain the increase in the number of death sentences by the country's intensified fight against drugs, which began in 2023. That year, the kingdom resumed executions for drug-related offenses. Prior to 2023, the execution of death sentences for such offenses had been suspended for three years. According to the publication, Saudi Arabia continues to be one of the largest markets for the distribution of the synthetic drug captagon.

Earlier, tourists were warned that swearing in Saudi Arabia could lead to criminal charges.
