In the TV24 program “Current Affairs on Military Operations in Ukraine,” Major Janis Slaydins of the Latvian National Armed Forces commented on Putin's statement about a possible end to the war and emphasized that Ukraine is facing serious problems due to the lack of security guarantees, writes LA.LV.

According to Slaydins, the main problem lies in the complete uncertainty regarding real security guarantees for Ukraine — at the moment, they simply do not exist. He considers the promises from the United States that “guarantees will be provided after a peace agreement is reached” to be empty words. In his opinion, clear and specific guarantees should be provided before signing any agreements to avoid further aggression from Russia in the future.

Slaydins also noted that issues such as reducing the army and the status of the Russian language are internal matters for Ukraine itself. There are often calls for concessions from Ukraine, but no one talks about the fact that Russia should be held accountable for what it has done.

He emphasized that the demands outlined in the “peace plan” can only be made by the defeated side. However, if you look at the map, Ukraine is not such a country and is not in a position of defeat.

Slaydins is confident that Ukraine is well aware that no one but Donald Trump can reach an agreement to freeze the conflict. Europe plays no significant role in this situation — apart from statements of support for American initiatives. For Russia, Europe is not considered a “serious player” at all.

Putin has stated his condition for ending the war: “Ukrainian troops must withdraw from the occupied territories — then the fighting will stop. If they do not withdraw — Russia will achieve this by force.”

Commenting on the conflict with Europe, Putin said: “If the Europeans have frightened their citizens and want to hear that we do not intend to attack Europe and have no aggressive plans, then please — we are ready to formalize this in any form.”

To this, Slaydins responded: everything that Russia has ever “formalized” has always been violated. “Trusting the Russians is absolutely pointless. Distrust of them has been confirmed for centuries,” he emphasized.
