Military leaders failed to prevent the Hamas attack.
Three generals and about a dozen senior commanders of the IDF were dismissed for failing to prevent the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. By the decision of the Chief of Staff, they will also be excluded from the army's reserve forces.
Specifically, this concerns the former head of IDF intelligence, Aaron Haliva, the former head of the operations division, Oded Basyuk, and Major General Yaron Finkelman, who was responsible for the southern military district at that time. Finkelman and Haliva had already resigned in January 2025 due to the miscalculations made on October 7. Basyuk left his post after the war between Israel and Iran in June. Additionally, disciplinary actions were imposed, in particular, on the head of the Israeli Air Force, Tomer Bar. Nine other generals and senior officers were also held accountable, according to the order.
The previous Chief of Staff of the IDF, who held the position since January 2023, Herzi Halevi, left his post in March, explaining his departure as personal responsibility for the failures of the Israeli army on October 7. His successor, Eyal Zamir, was tasked with conducting a re-evaluation and providing individual assessments of the commanders responsible for these failures.
Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces eliminated the terrorist Haytham Ali Tabatabai in the Beirut area, who was acting as the chief of staff of Hezbollah.
Tabatabai was a veteran and a key activist of this terrorist organization, having joined its ranks in the 1980s, and held several leadership positions, including commander of the Radwan unit and head of Hezbollah operations in Syria.
During the war, he was appointed commander of the organization's operational department. During Operation Northern Shields, after the elimination of most of Hezbollah's leadership, Tabatabai effectively led the military actions against Israel.
Upon completion of Operation Northern Shields, Tabatabai was appointed chief of staff of Hezbollah, leading the organization's reconstruction. Tabatabai commanded most of Hezbollah's units and made every effort to restore their readiness for a new war with Israel. He led Hezbollah's senior leadership and, due to his connections and capabilities, was an important center of knowledge and influence within this group.
The Israel Defense Forces will thwart attempts to reorganize and rearm the terrorist organization Hezbollah and will take decisive measures to eliminate any threat to the citizens of the State of Israel, while continuing to adhere to the agreements reached between the State of Israel and Lebanon.
