The Aggressor is Being Offered Ukraine — Are We Repeating 1938-1939?

Under this alarming headline, Maris Krautmanis analyzes Washington's 28-point peace plan in Neatkarīgā.

Trump as Chamberlain, Putin as Hitler – history is repeating itself. This time, however, there are forces that are trying to resist such a fatal advance and the idea that the aggressor can be appeased...

"There is only one point in the peace plan – Russia must leave the territory of Ukraine!" says former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin. Similarly, writer Valery Bochkow acknowledges on Facebook only one point of the peace plan: "Russia is a vampiric state, whose diplomacy ends where geography begins. It has no friends, only stocks of meat and oil. Its 'peacekeeping initiatives' are arrogant blackmail: either you are on your knees or you are dead. And every time the world offers it a place at the negotiating table, it plants a mine under the table. Therefore, the peace plan must be radical. Without these endless attempts to 'understand Russia'.

How can you understand a person who comes to your home for years, robs your refrigerator, and beats your children? What other context, what 'historical traumas' are needed? The peace plan consists of one point: 'Russia – step back!' Let it go where no one hears it and questions it. Allow it to talk to itself, like a drunken old man at the store. Let it argue with geography, threaten the world, tell its citizens that the whole world is against them – and in the meantime, the world will focus on the affairs of those who are still capable of living without imperial hysteria.

"In social media," notes M. Krautmanis, "messages from Kremlin propaganda 'trolls' in various languages are noticeable – particularly a lot in French and Polish. There are also some in Latvian. Russian narratives are published and proliferated not only by robots or well-known paid propagandists but also by 'useful idiots' who believe them and sing their tune along."
