Severe storms with heavy rainfall have caused flooding and destruction in many areas of northwestern Greece, local media reported on Saturday, according to LETA citing DPA.
Basements and ground floors of houses are flooded, cars are swept away, and landslides have blocked roads.
According to the Hellenic Meteorological Service, around 280 millimeters of rainfall fell in some areas of the northwestern part of the country in just a few hours.
The island of Corfu was particularly hard hit. "The village of Karousades, home to 2,000 people, is cut off from the outside world. Even the police station is blocked by tons of mud," the mayor of Northern Corfu told the newspaper "Kathimerini."
He added that authorities are hoping for the arrival of heavy machinery from the mainland. Many roads on the island are blocked or destroyed. Schools will remain closed on Monday.
Rain is expected to continue in the affected region throughout Saturday, but not with the same intensity.
In 2023, a major forest and brush fire occurred in northern Corfu. Meteorologists suspect that the current flooding is significantly stronger due to the lack of vegetation capable of holding back mudflows and rocks.
