Reuters stated that the US is preparing a foothold near Venezuela.
US military has begun to modernize an abandoned base in Puerto Rico. This and other facilities in the Virgin Islands could become footholds for the United States to increase pressure on Venezuela, Reuters reports.
Officials, experts, and military personnel interviewed by the agency suggest that construction at the site indicates the US is preparing for prolonged operations in the Caribbean.
Satellite images show that construction at the abandoned base began on September 17.
Retired US Marine Corps Colonel Mark Cancian noted that such changes are typical in preparation for an increase in military aircraft landings and takeoffs.
