French police have arrested five more people, including the main suspect, in connection with the jewelry theft from the Louvre that occurred this month, Paris prosecutor Laura Beko announced on Thursday, according to LETA citing AFP.
“He was in plain sight,” said Beko about the main suspect, adding that none of the stolen jewels have been found so far.
According to her, DNA evidence links the main suspect to the theft. He was one of four members of the group that committed the robbery on October 19.
“Regarding the other individuals in custody, these are people who can provide us with information about the course of events,” the prosecutor added, noting that it is still too early to disclose additional details about the suspects.
Five people were arrested on Wednesday in Paris and its surroundings.
Two suspects arrested on Saturday were charged on Wednesday with theft and participation in a criminal conspiracy after they partially confessed, the prosecutor's office reported. The court has ordered their pre-trial detention.
On October 19, masked criminals stormed the Louvre and stole nine items from the imperial collection, including jewelry belonging to Napoleon and his wife Josephine. The value of the stolen jewels is estimated at 88 million euros.
A week later, French media reported the arrest of two suspects in the theft case.
One of them was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris before boarding a flight to Algeria.
The second was arrested in the Seine-Saint-Denis department.
