The EC intends to provide a loan to Kyiv from Russian assets by the end of 2025.
The European Commission (EC) plans to provide Ukraine with an interest-free loan based on frozen Russian assets by the end of 2025. This was stated by European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius in an interview with Bloomberg.
"A very important decision could be the provision of a 'reparations loan' based on frozen assets, without confiscation, to direct 150 billion euros to Kyiv, which can be used for defense. I hope this will happen (...). According to the roadmap we have approved, we also expect that the loan will be provided to Ukraine by the end of this year," the commissioner said.
As Kubilius noted, "important decisions" on this matter will be made by the leaders of the member states at the European Union (EU) Council of Heads of State, which will take place from December 18 to 19.
Earlier, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated that the EU does not have a clear answer regarding the legality of the confiscation of frozen Russian assets. He also noted that if you ask lawyers about this situation, they give "different and unclear" answers.
