Researchers from the University of Quebec in Montreal have presented promising non-medication methods for combating erectile dysfunction. Among them are vacuum devices, shockwave therapy, and advanced regenerative approaches such as the use of stem cells and platelet-rich plasma.
Treatment of erectile dysfunction without the use of medications, including vacuum devices, shockwave therapy, and regenerative approaches, has become a topic of discussion. This was reported to The Conversation by researchers from the Department of Sexology at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM).
The researchers emphasize that erectile dysfunction is most often related not so much to age as to various diseases. These ailments, such as diabetes or cardiovascular conditions, disrupt normal blood flow in the body.
For a full erection, it is critically important to have unobstructed blood flow to the tissues of the penis and to retain it there. This is why many of the new therapeutic approaches aim to restore this vital process.
Regenerative Methods: Stem Cells and Plasma
Stem cell therapy involves the introduction of special cells capable of repairing damaged tissues and vessels. This helps improve blood flow necessary for a healthy erection.
The use of platelet-rich plasma is based on the utilization of the patient’s own blood. Components are extracted from it that actively stimulate the growth of new blood vessels and significantly improve blood supply.
Shockwave Therapy
The scientists explained: "Low-intensity shockwave therapy affects tissues using weak acoustic waves, which can also trigger the formation of new blood vessels and enhance blood flow necessary for erection."
Currently, all these innovative methods remain in the experimental research stage. Although the results appear promising, their long-term effectiveness and complete safety still require final confirmation.
