Doctor: Severe lung damage from vapes develops over several months

"Popcorn lung disease" refers to bronchiolitis — inflammation of the small bronchi caused by inhaling harmful chemical compounds. One of the key risk factors is diacetyl — a flavoring agent found in e-liquids for electronic cigarettes, warned pulmonologist Elena Pyatakova.

The doctor explained that with regular inhalation of vapor, such substances penetrate the lower parts of the respiratory system and can cause irreversible damage to lung tissue. According to her, noticeable symptoms sometimes manifest just a few weeks after the systematic use of a vape begins, and in severe cases, chronic or even life-threatening lung damage develops over several months.

In the early stages, the disease may present as a persistent dry cough, shortness of breath even with minimal exertion, wheezing, as well as a burning or tight sensation in the chest. Many initially mistake these signs for a common cold or a reaction to weather conditions, continue using the vape, and waste time.

The specialist emphasized that worsening shortness of breath, inability to take a deep breath, bluish lips, pronounced weakness, and a feeling of air shortage require urgent medical attention. The sooner one stops using the vape and starts therapy, the higher the likelihood of halting the disease's progression and maintaining a normal quality of life.
