Traveling with small children often turns into a challenging experience: strollers, snacks, sleep schedules, and airport queues can quickly spoil the impression even of a short trip. However, a well-chosen destination can significantly ease family vacations.
This conclusion was reached by analysts from the hotel booking service LateRooms, who compiled a special ranking of European cities — The Family Breaks Index. It shows where parents with small children can most easily organize a trip and have a comfortable time.
How the Ranking Was Compiled
In forming the index, experts considered several factors important for family travel. In particular, they analyzed the average flight duration (based on departures from UK airports), travel time from the airport to the city center, walkability, the number of attractions for children, as well as the number of accommodation options suitable for families.
The main goal of the study is to highlight cities where the logistics of the trip are as simple as possible, and where there are enough activities for children to make the vacation comfortable and interesting.
Copenhagen — The Leader of the Ranking
The first place was taken by the capital of Denmark — Copenhagen. It takes only about 15 minutes to get from the airport to the city center by metro, which is especially convenient for travelers with small children.
The city also stands out for its high walkability: Copenhagen received a score of 99 out of 100 for ease of walking. This means that many attractions are located close to each other and are easily accessible without long transport rides.
An additional advantage is the wide range of family-friendly accommodations. More than a quarter of the lodging options offer conditions tailored for traveling with children — spacious rooms and family amenities.
Copenhagen is also rich in entertainment. One of the main places for family recreation is Tivoli Gardens — one of the oldest amusement parks in Europe, which, according to some reports, inspired the creators of Disneyland. Here, attractions, playgrounds, and cozy cafes come together. The colorful Nyhavn harbor is also popular with tourists, where families can enjoy pleasant walks.
The developed cycling infrastructure, numerous playgrounds, and well-maintained waterfronts make the Danish capital one of the most comfortable cities in Europe for family vacations.
