Pain, Tears, and an Unfulfilled Dream: Why the Actress Lost the Role of Margarita

Ekaterina Volkova could have become Margarita in Bortko's series. However, life imposed its cruel corrections.

Actress Ekaterina Volkova has been playing the legendary Margarita in the theatrical production "Master and Margarita" for 20 years. When director Vladimir Bortko conceived the idea of making a film adaptation in the early 2000s, he immediately invited Ekaterina for the lead role. However, life had other plans, and Volkova did not appear in the film. Moreover, during this period, she experienced a terrible loss.

The star of the action film "KGB in a Tuxedo" was interviewed by Ksenia Sobchak. Ekaterina explained why the lead role of her life ultimately "slipped away" to Anna Kovalchuk. It turns out that at that time, Volkova was pregnant. "I was approved, but I didn’t mention [the pregnancy]. Then I lost the baby," the actress confessed.

Ksenia asked why a compromise was not found and why Ekaterina ultimately revealed her condition. Here’s what Volkova replied: "Well, let’s say filming was supposed to start in three months. In three months, I will already have... I simply won’t be able to play Margarita anymore."

Ekaterina was informed about her removal from the role by Valery Todorovsky, one of the producers of the series "Master and Margarita." Volkova could not hold back her emotions and cried. She was supported by her colleague Alexander Abdulov, who was cast as Koroviev. He even told Bortko that he would be a fool if he didn’t make Volkova Margarita.

However, the creators of the project did not want to wait for her to recover after giving birth and insisted on their decision. Unfortunately, this pregnancy was not meant to be for the actress.
