No Laughing Matter: How a Changed Sense of Humor Can Indicate Early Dementia

The warning signs of a dangerous disease are not always obvious. But you can definitely catch the changes if you are attentive, doctors say.

When a person is in the advanced stage of dementia, it is impossible not to notice. They begin to get confused in their thoughts, stop understanding what day it is, and where they live. It often happens that the affected person does not recognize their loved ones and even themselves in the mirror. Unfortunately, it is currently impossible to cure dementia.

However, it is quite possible to slow down the progression of the disease. Therefore, the sooner you consult a neurologist, the better. At the early stages, the warning signs can be quite helpful. At first glance, they may seem harmless, but believe me, it is worth exercising caution.

According to neuropsychologist Henk Swaenepoel, the first alarming signals may appear during communication.

For example, people with early-stage dementia experience a change in their sense of humor. Jokes become mean-spirited and cutting, creating the impression that the person wants to offend the interlocutor. In reality, they do not. The affected person genuinely thinks they are joking lightly and harmlessly.

"Often, patients with dementia may make inappropriate jokes and/or show a lack of tact," says Henk Swaenepoel.

Another warning sign: the person feels that you want to offend them. With your questions, jokes, or even ordinary conversation. Any emotion becomes painful for them. As a result, the person withdraws, as if distancing themselves.

Later, other signals appear:

  • apathy or reluctance to speak;

  • changes in personality and mood (for example, depression);

  • lack of restraint during conversation — emotions are bubbling over;

  • compulsive or repetitive behavior (for example, frequent shaving or collecting items);

  • unusual verbal, physical, or sexual behavior.

"Try to identify triggers as soon as possible. For example, a disruption in daily routine can cause anxiety in a person. They need to do familiar things and be under the supervision of loved ones and a doctor," concluded the neuropsychologist.

Dementia and Attitude Towards Money

Another warning sign is a sudden change in financial status. A person who has been good at saving their entire life suddenly starts to squander money, often without realizing what they are doing.
