A Simple Winter Trick for Cleanliness in the Hallway: The Floor Will Stay Dry Even in Slush

In winter, the hallway suffers the most: snow from shoes melts, the floor becomes wet and dirty, and cleaning turns into an endless process. But there is a simple kitchen life hack that really works and helps maintain cleanliness at the entrance.

Why the Floor by the Door is Always Dirty in Winter

The cold brings snow, water, and sand, which we inevitably bring into the house on our shoes. Even the thickest mat doesn’t always cope: moisture accumulates underneath it, making the floor slippery and damaging the covering.

This is especially noticeable on tiles, laminate, and wooden floors, where water quickly spreads and leaves marks.

A Kitchen Ingredient That Solves the Problem

To ensure the mat truly serves its purpose, simply sprinkle some regular salt underneath it. This is a simple and budget-friendly method that few people know about.

Salt works in several ways:

  • it absorbs moisture that drips from shoes;
  • it traps sand and dirt;
  • it creates additional friction, preventing the mat from slipping.

How to Properly Use This Life Hack

Before placing the mat, evenly distribute a thin layer of salt on the floor in the entrance area. It’s important not to overdo it — just a small amount is enough to cover the space under the mat.

After that, lay the mat back down. If necessary, the salt can be refreshed — especially during periods of heavy snowfall.

A Result That Is Immediately Noticeable

The floor at the entrance remains dry, without puddles or streaks. Even if guests enter the house with wet shoes, the moisture does not spread across the hallway, significantly reducing the risk of slipping. This method works equally well on tiles, laminate, and wooden surfaces.

At the end of winter, you can simply remove the mat and clean up the remaining salt with a regular wet mop.
