Kidney stones cause severe pain and may require surgical intervention if conservative therapy does not help. Endocrinologist Zuhra Pavlova explained which foods may contribute to their formation.
Main Risk Factors
Men face kidney stones more often than women. The causes of stone formation include bad habits, lifestyle, heredity, and poor diet. A person may not suspect the presence of stones until they move, causing severe pain.
According to the doctor, oxalate stones are the most common (about 75% of cases), followed by phosphate stones (10-12%) and uric acid stones (13-15%).
- The acidity level of urine is important for oxalate stones. Not drinking enough water → urine becomes more acidic → higher risk of stone formation.
Foods to Avoid in Large Quantities:
- Carbonated and sugary drinks
- Tea and coffee (more than 4–5 cups a day)
- Juices with high sugar content
- Greens: spinach and sorrel (not daily and not in large portions)
- Excessive protein products: walnuts, natural yogurt, beans, tuna, tofu
- Large amounts of chocolate
- Excessive fruits and berries
- Beer
- Offal: liver, kidneys, tongues, pâtés
- Meat broths with elevated uric acid
It is important not to completely eliminate these foods. Moderation and variety in the diet will help maintain kidney health and overall well-being.
