Severe gas production is not always related to the consumption of legumes, cabbage, or carbonated drinks. The causes of flatulence can be much deeper — from stress to hormonal changes.
Expert: Emma Derbyshire, Dietitian
According to the specialist, emotional stress can directly affect the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.
“During stress, a person often starts to swallow air, which leads to bloating and increased flatulence,” noted Derbyshire.
In addition, the problem can be triggered by chronic constipation, as well as fluid retention in the body, which often occurs during long-distance flights or when taking certain medications.
Among other possible causes, the dietitian highlighted:
- individual food intolerances;
- irritable bowel syndrome;
- dysbiosis, where the balance of microflora is disrupted and food is digested poorly.
In women, flatulence may increase due to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, as well as due to the body's tendency to swell during this period.
The expert emphasized: if bloating occurs frequently and is accompanied by pain or other unpleasant symptoms, it is advisable to consult a doctor to rule out gastrointestinal diseases.
