Japanese researchers developed an artificial intelligence model AI-IR that assesses insulin resistance based on standard clinical indicators and helps identify individuals at increased risk of several oncological diseases.

A study published in the journal Nature Communications indicates a connection between insulin resistance and the development of several types of cancer.

Japanese researchers developed an artificial intelligence model capable of assessing this metabolic disorder based on standard medical data to evaluate its impact on cancer risk, reports entrevue.fr.

The model, named AI-IR, is based on nine clinical indicators typically observed during routine examinations. Tested on nearly 500,000 participants from a large cohort, it identified a link between high insulin resistance and an increased incidence of twelve types of cancer.

The researchers clarify that this is not a direct cause-and-effect relationship, but rather a contributing risk factor. Biological mechanisms are proposed, including hyperinsulinemia, which may stimulate cell proliferation, as well as metabolic imbalances that create an environment conducive to tumor development.

According to the authors, this tool could help refine prevention strategies by allowing for the early identification of individuals at increased risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain types of cancer, in addition to classic indicators such as body mass index.
