The reason for the simultaneous impact of two 'lost' Ukrainian drones into empty oil tanks on Latvian territory may potentially be the AI component in the programming of their course.

According to LSM, this assumption was expressed by the head of the Drone Systems Competence Center in the National Armed Forces of Latvia, Modris Kairišs.

Kairišs's comments are cited in an explanatory article about how Russian electronic warfare systems can mislead Ukrainian strike drones, causing them to enter the Baltic countries when they should not have done so.

Kairišs noted that the identical impact site of the lost drones that flew into the oil depot in Rezekne on May 7 suggests that the devices have elements of artificial intelligence in their programming.

"Long-range drones have AI elements. They can 'spot' targets they were programmed to hit. Therefore, this may explain why they crashed into the oil terminal tanks, which visually resemble targets on Russian territory," emphasized Modris Kairišs.

No official confirmations regarding this matter have been announced so far; this assumption is presented as one of the versions.

After this incident – still the most serious of all – Ukraine stated that its drones hit the oil depot due to Russian electronic warfare. It is worth noting that these events triggered the collapse of the Latvian government coalition.
