The American IT giant Oracle laid off 30,000 employees in a month — they were replaced by a neural network that some of the laid-off employees had trained, reports Time.
Employees of the company were tasked with describing their work to train the corporate artificial intelligence. Despite the fear of being 'replaced', workers found themselves in a no-win situation. 'We trained the AI to replace us, but AI is the only way to handle our workload. You are falling behind on all deadlines, and you are forced to act,' said one of the laid-off employees.
'It really makes you feel used and humiliated. They make you do something, it gets recorded, and then they are going to replace you with what you just created,' noted another former employee.
According to Oracle's Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison, companies that create infrastructure for AI will become the biggest players in the economy of the future, which is why the company is raising and investing billions in data center projects.
Last month at a developer conference, Ellison stated that the company's programmers no longer write code. 'The code that Oracle writes is not written by Oracle. It is written by our artificial intelligence models,' he said.
However, according to some former employees, the AI tools that the company forced them to use were detrimental to their work. Oracle's demands led junior employees to use AI to create large amounts of buggy code, forcing senior engineers to spend time fixing it.
