Not far from Riga, there is a settlement that has long met urban standards in terms of population size, infrastructure development, and construction pace. Now, proposals to officially grant it city status are becoming more frequent.

In his Facebook account, former Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Raimonds Čudars writes: "Today (i.e., Friday, June 19 - Ed.) together with colleagues we submitted a proposal to the Saeima to grant city rights to one of the largest villages in Latvia - Cēsis! Cēsis is growing and developing - now it has over 5000 residents!" According to Latvian laws, if a rural settlement has more than 5000 permanent residents, the local government must initiate a petition for city status. In recent years, the population of Cēsis has significantly increased, new housing is being constructed, infrastructure projects are being implemented, and transport connections are being developed. Additional "bonuses" include a railway and proximity to the sea.
