The European Union has indicated that it may restrict the use of VPNs, which are used to bypass age restrictions.
The Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Henné Virkkunen, was asked how authorities plan to prevent the circumvention of age verification systems using VPNs.
In response, she stated that authorities intend to move towards creating "more robust solutions" that will complicate access for minors to prohibited content.
This involves implementing "very reliable" mechanisms, especially for pornographic websites, to exclude access for users under 18, the official added.
It is worth noting that recently, VPNs have been actively restricted in Russia. President Zelensky even warned the Baltic states that these restrictions could be related to preparations for a Russian attack on the Baltic countries. The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, did not believe Zelensky link.
For reference: VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a technology that creates an encrypted connection between the user's device and a remote server. It hides the user's real IP address and protects data from interception by providers or malicious actors.
Thus, not very law-abiding citizens bypass existing state bans on foreign websites and read (watch) what authorities are trying to hide from them.
