Chinese builders have completed the construction of a more than 14-kilometer underwater tunnel under the Yangtze River for a future high-speed line, where trains will reach speeds of 350 km/h.

Builders have completed the underwater section of the tunnel under the Yangtze, TASS reports, citing the South China Morning Post. This section exceeds 14 kilometers in length and connects Chongming Island in Shanghai with Taizhou County in Jiangsu Province.

The entire construction cycle is planned to be completed by the end of this year. After the launch, trains will be able to pass through the tunnel at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, ensuring fast transportation between major cities.

The tunnel will be part of a high-speed line approximately 2,000 kilometers long, connecting the eastern and central agglomerations of China, all the way to Chengdu in Sichuan Province. Investments in the project have already exceeded 500 billion yuan, which is more than 72 billion dollars. Additionally, China plans to build at least six major underwater transport tunnels.

As reported by the media, a unique road tunnel through the Tian Shan mountains, measuring 22.13 kilometers, has opened for traffic in northwestern China.

The construction of the Pinglu Canal in China is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
