Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have completed testing an innovative spray for the emergency cessation of bleeding of any severity. Initially, this was a military development based on modern achievements in bioengineering and materials science. It proved so successful that it received the Presidential Award at the KAIST Q-Day 2025 and the Minister of National Defense Award at the National Academic Conference KAIST-KNDU.

The spray consists of three components: alginate, gellan gum, and chitosan. The first two react with calcium ions in the blood, forming a dense hydrogel. Chitosan chemically binds with blood components, enhancing coagulation and biological hemostasis. The entire process takes about a second, resulting in a reliable physical barrier to the flow of blood, which also provides chemical protection for the wound.

The fine particles in the spray penetrate wounds of any shape and depth, including lacerations. The gel absorbs blood up to 725% of its own weight, causing it to expand and completely fill the wound. High adhesion is maintained, and the strength of the barrier reaches 40 kPa, which can withstand even strong blood pressure. In such a "patch," cell viability remains above 99%, and antibacterial efficacy reaches 99.9%.

The spray has already been tested on animals, and no side effects were found; tissues in the wound recover normally after bleeding cessation, including the healing of blood vessels. The product has been tested for two years in adverse climatic conditions to ensure it retains its properties under high humidity and temperature fluctuations. This will be useful not only for the military but also for rescuers, and it will allow for the stockpiling of first aid supplies in remote areas.
