A Billion Smartphone Users Urged to Update

Android users with OS 13 and older urged to update for security.

About a billion Android users are risking their security and personal data. This was reported by Android Headlines.

Journalists from the specialized media drew this conclusion after analyzing a StatCounter report. According to the data, around 30 percent of Android smartphone owners continue to use old versions of the operating system (OS) — Android 13 or earlier systems. The authors believe that such devices are most vulnerable to attacks from fraudsters and hackers.

The article states that currently, smartphone manufacturers can provide up to 5-7 years of support with updates and patches. However, in 2022, when Android 13 was released, this practice was not widespread: most phones had 2-3 years of support. Therefore, owners of outdated OS were urged to update their devices.

"Don't get us wrong. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with Android 13 and older versions," the journalists noted. However, they acknowledged that specific models based on an OS released 2-3 years ago may stop receiving updates in the near future.

Earlier, Forbes urged iPhone users with iOS 18 to update to iOS 26 as soon as possible. The publication explained that outdated OS versions may contain vulnerabilities.
