In the US, an unmanned cargo ship with wing sails is being prepared for launch

The American company Clippership, specializing in marine robotics, is completing the development of an unusual unmanned cargo ship 24 meters long, powered by wind.

The vessel will be equipped with two folding rigid wings made of carbon composite, which are promised to be twice as efficient as traditional fabric sails. The ship is designed for transatlantic crossings with minimal human involvement.

It is worth noting that the world's first shipping trials of cargo ships with wing sails, which generate thrust through the laws of aerodynamics rather than simply under the influence of air masses, took place two years ago. Wing sails have demonstrated their effectiveness and will be adopted as a means to save on fuel without completely abandoning internal combustion engines. The Clippership project proposes to rely entirely on wind as the driving force for the unmanned cargo vessel.

The company is developing the ship's design with specialists in naval architecture such as Dykstra Naval Architects and Glosten. A contract has been signed with the Dutch shipyard KM Yachtbuilders for the vessel's construction and launch. The project has been approved by relevant maritime oversight organizations. The ship will sail under the flag of Malta. The launch is expected at the end of 2026, after which comprehensive shipping trials will begin, including crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

It is interesting to emphasize that this will be a relatively small cargo ship, clearly intended for the delivery of special cargoes. The hold is designed to accommodate 75 euro pallets in a protected climate-controlled space.

The declared goal of the project is to significantly reduce emissions during maritime transport by utilizing wind energy, as well as to enhance the efficiency and reliability of autonomous vessels. This is a step towards sustainable logistics, especially for small volumes of cargo, where traditional container ships are less economical.
