Irina lived in the 1st century in Migdonia (Macedonia) and was the daughter of the city's ruler, named Licinius. He was a staunch pagan and named his daughter Penelope at birth.
But the girl secretly met with a Christian priest, who was the apostle (of the seventy) Timothy, and became interested in the faith that was unknown to her before. One day, three birds flew in through her window – a dove (a symbol of chastity and humility) with an olive branch (God's grace), an eagle with a wreath (victory over enemies), and a raven with a snake (suffering).
She told her spiritual mentor about this, and he explained that her life path was to become the bride of Christ. Then the girl accepted baptism from Timothy. Her father was outraged, and when she refused to return to paganism, he furiously ordered her to be thrown, bound, under the hooves of horses. But the animals' fury turned not on the girl, but on her father. The horses charged at him, and one bit off his hand and began to trample him. Only Irina's prayer stopped this and saved her father's life. After that, Licinius believed, and together with his wife and three thousand witnesses of the miracle, he accepted Christianity.
Then a pagan named Sedekiah was chosen as the ruler of the city. Trying to stop the spread of Christianity that had begun with Irina, he first threw the girl into a pit with poisonous snakes. But they did not touch her, and an angel brought her food. They tried to saw her in half, but it left no marks on her young body. And when a wound did appear on her body, a lightning bolt struck from heaven, hitting many of her tormentors. And no torture could kill her.
Eventually, Irina found herself free and continued to preach, heal, and perform other miracles. Many people converted to her faith. When she was in Ephesus, the Lord foretold her imminent death. Obedient to His will, she climbed a high mountain and asked her companions to block the entrance to the cave with stones, sealing her inside. But after four days, when the entrance was opened, her body was not found inside.
