Windows 10 users have lost the ability to pause updates. This is how Microsoft "encourages" users to abandon the "ten" and switch to version 11 sooner.
In Windows 10 and newer versions, it is not possible to pause the installation of updates if the operating system (OS) copy has not been registered in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This was noted by the publication Windows Latest.
On October 14, Microsoft ceased the release of regular updates for Windows 10, but continued to distribute them among participants of the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Journalists from the media noticed that on personal computers (PCs) running Windows 10 not registered in ESU, the option to postpone the installation of updates has disappeared.
According to the journalists, this way Microsoft — whether accidentally or intentionally — has complicated life for OS users. Media editor Abhijit MB noted that Windows users previously had the option to postpone the installation of updates for up to 7 days. He explained that users will also not be able to pause the installation of Windows 11 if they accidentally started it.
However, Windows 10 users who became participants in the ESU program still have the ability to postpone the installation of updates.
The journalists concluded that users registered in the Extended Security Updates program will receive updates and security patches for Windows 10 for free at least until October 2026.
