A bug in Windows has been found that triggers the recovery process and data deletion.
Microsoft has reported a bug that can destroy all data on a Windows computer. This was reported by Windows Latest.
The BitLocker feature in Microsoft operating systems (OS) is responsible for data encryption. Journalists noted that due to an unknown error, the OS can randomly initiate the recovery process and require a recovery key. The media authors explained that if it is not entered, Windows will delete all data stored on the device.
Microsoft acknowledged the existence of the problem and stated that it began to manifest in Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, and even Windows 10. Engineers also noticed that the issues most often occur on computers with Intel processors and the Connected Standby feature enabled.
Windows Latest journalists noted that users need to create a BitLocker recovery key and store it in a safe place—outside the Windows computer. "Create a backup of the BitLocker recovery key and, preferably, another copy," the authors advised. They also noted that the data encryption feature can be disabled through the settings.
