Neuralink-chipped patient learns to control a robotic arm.
American Nick Ray, who received a Neuralink implant, has learned to control a robotic arm. Ray announced this on his X account.
Nick Ray is the eighth participant in Neuralink trials to receive a brain implant. The man, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is paralyzed below the neck. In a video, Ray demonstrated how he can control the movement of a robotic manipulator that holds a cup with a drink, while also engaging in conversation with others.
According to the trial participant, he can move the robotic arm, as well as squeeze and relax its fingers using thought alone. "For the first time in many years, I wore my own hat! I heated chicken nuggets in the microwave and ate them! I learned to open the refrigerator and take off and put on lids from cans!" the Neuralink patient shared about his success.
Nick Ray also noted that he set a record in a dexterity test. With the help of the new arm, he managed to move 39 objects across the table in 5 minutes. However, the man mentioned that mastering new skills required him to work for 8 hours every day. "This project is incredible, and I am so grateful to be a part of it," Ray concluded.
