EU countries want to restrict social media for children under 16

Members of the European Parliament's relevant committee approved a proposal on Thursday to enhance the protection of minors online, including restricting their access to social media.

In a report adopted by the European Parliament's Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, lawmakers recommended completely banning access to social media for children under the age of 13.

For children under 16, such access is only possible with parental consent, according to the proposal.

The MEPs also called for fines and bans for platforms that violate the bloc's rules on protecting minors under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

To limit access to harmful content, MEPs propose banning interaction-based algorithms for minors, disabling addictive features, and prohibiting mechanisms similar to gambling for children.

The proposal will be put to a vote by the entire European Parliament during the plenary session from November 24 to 27.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen personally supports the restriction of social media for children and has tasked a group of experts with presenting a report by the end of the year on measures that can be taken at the EU level.
