Gennaro Gattuso has left the position of head coach of the Italian national team. The contract with the specialist was terminated by mutual consent.
“With a heavy heart, having not achieved the set goal, I believe my time as the coach of the national team has come to an end. It has been an honor for me to lead the national team and to do so with a group of players who have shown dedication and selflessness. But my greatest gratitude goes to the fans, to all Italians who have consistently shown their love and support for the national team during these months,” Gattuso's statement is reported by the IFF website.
The last match for the specialist was the playoff match for the 2026 World Cup qualification, where the Italian national team lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina (1:1, penalties 1:4).
Gennaro Gattuso held the position of head coach of the Italian national team since June 15, 2025.
Earlier, the head of the Italian national team delegation Gianluigi Buffon and the president of the Italian Football Federation Gabriele Gravina also resigned.
