At the World Ice Hockey Championship in Switzerland, the Latvian national team will compete with a noticeably renewed roster. After the Olympic season, many familiar leaders will be absent from the team, and particular attention is focused on two young hockey players — 17-year-old Oliver Murnieks and 18-year-old Alberts Šmits.

In Olympic years, the World Ice Hockey Championships traditionally take place in the shadow of the Games. After a busy season, many NHL players skip the tournament, and the rosters of national teams change significantly. This year, this is particularly noticeable in the Latvian team.

Of the 25 hockey players who were part of the Olympic roster, less than half will help the team at the World Championship. The reasons for players' absences vary — from injuries and the ongoing season in North America to family circumstances and health recovery.

For instance, Eduards Tralmaks continues to play overseas, Dāns Ločmelis and Anrijs Ravinskis are recovering from injuries, Kristiāns Rubīns has taken a break for recovery, and Rihards Bukarts recently sustained an injury. Uvis Balinskis and Jānis Jaks are expecting additions to their families.

At the same time, some changes are not related to circumstances but to the gradual renewal of the team. This process has essentially affected the long-time team captain Kaspars Daugaviņš and Roberts Bukarts.

Hockey coach Guntis Bāliņš noted that the absence of some NHL players does not particularly surprise anyone.

"Olympic Games attract even those hockey players who have long been of no interest to the Latvian national team. It was clear that they would not be at the World Championship," he stated.

What is important to understand is that this tournament for Latvia is not only a fight for results but also the beginning of a noticeable generational shift. The team is gradually betting on young players who can become the foundation of the national team in the coming years.

Particular attention is now focused on the two youngest players on the team — Oliver Murnieks and Alberts Šmits. They are only 17 and 18 years old, respectively.

Just recently, the head coach of the national team, Harijs Vītoliņš, said that he did not plan to take players from the junior national team to the World Championship. However, after the successful performance of the Latvian youth team at the junior World Championship, where they finished in fourth place, the position changed.

As a result, Murnieks received a call-up to the national team. For both young hockey players, the upcoming tournament could be an important opportunity to make a name for themselves ahead of the NHL draft, which will take place at the end of June.

Particularly high expectations are associated with Šmits. He is projected to be selected in the draft with the highest number in the history of Latvian hockey.

The World Championship in Switzerland will serve as not only a test of strength for the renewed Latvian national team but also an opportunity to see what the team looks like after the start of serious changes.
