Four-time Olympic champion Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus has retired.
Titmus is 25 years old, she won two gold medals at Tokyo 2020 (200 and 400 m freestyle) and Paris 2024 (400 m and 4×200 m freestyle relay), as well as three silver and one bronze medals. At the World Championships, the Australian has four golds, two silvers, and three bronzes.
Ariarne is the world record holder in the 200 m freestyle (1:52.23).
"This is not an easy decision, but I am very happy with it. I have always loved swimming, but it seems that this time I have stepped away from the sport and realized that some things in my life that have always been important to me are now a little more important than swimming. The turning point for me, the moment when everything changed, was the preparation for the Games in Paris. I faced some health issues that, to be honest, shook me quite a bit. Perhaps it was the first time I thought about something other than swimming.
Delving into these health issues, I really had to look inside myself and think about what is most important to me. Besides swimming, I have always had goals in my personal life, but swimming has always been the most important until this point, and I have only just realized that these goals and what I want for the future are now the most important to me. But most of all, I am looking forward to what comes next," said Titmus.
The athlete noted that she wants to focus on television work as well as working with young athletes from regional Australia.
