As reported to the LETA agency by the Ministry of Defense, on Tuesday Melnis and Minister of the Interior Janis Dombrova met with the US Ambassador to Latvia Melissa Argeros to discuss cooperation between Latvia and the US in the field of defense and initiatives to strengthen regional security.
"Cooperation with the US is the foundation of Latvia's security and that of the entire Baltic region. In the current geopolitical situation, the US military presence in Latvia and our joint efforts to strengthen our defense capabilities, as well as the eastern border, serve as a clear confirmation of the unity of our allies. At this dynamic stage of the country's defense potential growth, the experience and practical support of the US acquire a new, even deeper strategic significance," noted Melnis.
Dombrova, for his part, emphasized that Latvia's internal security is an integral part of the overall security of the state. Furthermore, Latvia highly values the support of the US in enhancing its ability to respond to modern security challenges, including preventing risks of illegal migration, hybrid threats, and transnational crime. "Strong cooperation with the US is an important prerequisite for the security of both Latvia and all of Europe," Dombrova stressed.
During the meeting, officials discussed bilateral cooperation between Latvia and the US in strengthening defense capabilities, the US military presence in Latvia, support for Ukraine, and the reinforcement of Latvia's eastern border.
