In Berlin, playgrounds and sports facilities have started to be closed due to an invasion of oak caterpillars, which may pose health risks to humans, writes Metro, citing local authorities.
It has been reported that caterpillars have spread across all 12 districts of the German capital. As a result, the summer festival at the Jungfernheide family center has been canceled, and several popular city parks, including Gerlitzer, have been closed.
The heads of Berlin's districts have appealed to the city authorities to take urgent measures at the city level, as the invasion of caterpillars poses a threat to public health.
It is noted that the danger comes from the microscopic hairs that cover the caterpillars. They can cause severe skin irritation, allergic reactions, eye inflammation, and respiratory problems in both humans and animals.
Earlier reports indicated that the districts of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Treptow-Köpenick, Steglitz-Zehlendorf, and Spandau, where more oaks grow than in other areas of Berlin, have been most affected by the invasion of oak silk moth caterpillars.
