Private individuals are planned to be prohibited from filming the meetings of the capital's council and committees, as provided by the regulations of the municipality supported today by the Riga City Council's Finance and Administrative Affairs Committee.

The regulations will establish that audiovisual recording and live broadcasting of meetings are carried out and published using devices designated for this purpose by the municipality.

At the same time, filming will be allowed for council deputies, media representatives, and staff from the Central Administration's communication department.

As reported, after a clash between deputies in the committee on security, order, and anti-corruption, a discussion began about the need to prohibit deputies from filming what happens during meetings.

Riga's Vice Mayor Edvards Ratnieks (National Alliance) proposed banning unauthorized video recording of meetings of the Riga City Council and its committees in order to improve the quality of the council's work and show respect for other participants in the meetings.

In his opinion, certain deputies from opposition factions use council meetings to create shows and content for their social media channels. This hinders the quality of the meetings and deliberately humiliates other attendees, Ratnieks believes.

Despite the intention to prohibit deputies from filming, the amendments to the regulations do not provide for this.

The final decision on the amendments is to be made at a meeting of the Riga City Council.
