After the Swedish parliament ratified the agreement between Estonia and Sweden on the rental of prisons, Swedish prisoners may arrive in Estonia in August, reports the ERR portal.

The agreement stipulates that Sweden will pay Estonia €30.6 million per year for the maintenance of up to 300 prisoners and €8,500 per month for each additional prisoner.

For the agreement between Estonia and Sweden on the rental of prisons to come into force, it still needs to be ratified by the Estonian parliament. According to the plan, this could happen on June 10. The agreement will come into effect after the exchange of diplomatic notes between the parties.

"After that, practical steps will begin," said Tiina Unuks, head of the prison organization department of the Prison Service.

"Prisoners will arrive gradually. From the moment the agreement comes into force in August, 100 prisoners will arrive, by the end of the year there will be up to 200 prisoners in Tartu Prison, and by about the same time next year, according to the agreement, there will be up to 600 Swedish prisoners in Tartu," noted Unuks.

After the ratification of the agreement, the prison service will begin transferring prisoners currently held in Tartu Prison to Viru and Tallinn Prisons to allow time to update the facilities and carry out repairs before the arrival of Swedish prisoners.

Once the agreement comes into force, the Prison Service plans to hire more than 300 new staff over the year who will work with Swedish prisoners in Tartu.
