Europe and the USA should continue to implement the approach of 'peace through strength' regarding Russia, stated Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže, commenting on a report by Bloomberg that Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, together with Ukraine, are developing a plan to engage Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in negotiations to end the war initiated by Russia in Ukraine.
As reported by the LETA agency, advisor to the minister Tom Sadovskis stated that in the opinion of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, these efforts confirm that everyone - Ukraine, Europe, the USA - wants to achieve peace, and the aggressor country Russia is the only one not ready for a constructive peace process.
"Currently, there are no signs that the Kremlin is willing to abandon its destructive goals in Ukraine. It should be noted that Russia is trying to achieve them either on the battlefield or at the negotiating table," said Braže.
In her opinion, the only path to sustainable peace is further coordinated international pressure on Russia. Europe and the USA should continue to implement the approach of 'peace through strength' by strengthening the sanctions regime, increasing support for Ukraine, and preventing the international legitimization of Russia as an aggressor state.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also emphasized the need to continue active cooperation with third countries to prevent circumvention of sanctions and reduce Russia's ability to finance aggression.
Braže highlighted that currently, Russia is stuck on the battlefield and increasingly feels the consequences of the war in economic and social spheres, while Ukraine demonstrates the ability to achieve military objectives deeper into Russian territory, impacting its economy, energy sector, and military industry. The Minister of Foreign Affairs concluded that this confirms that the European approach is working.
