The candidate for prime minister plans to agree on the distribution of portfolios before the weekend.
As previously reported, partners in the future government have agreed that 16 portfolios (14 ministerial portfolios, as well as the posts of prime minister and speaker of the Saeima) will be divided equally - 4 portfolios for each of the 4 political forces that entered the new ruling coalition. Of course, given the current situation and the declared priority - internal and external security - the posts of ministers of defense and internal affairs are of key importance. There should be no delay in nominating candidates for these posts also because, according to tradition, the candidate for prime minister always coordinates the nomination of the minister of defense with the president, as the head of state is also the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. At the time of preparing this material for publication, it has not yet been decided who will ultimately receive the portfolio of the minister of defense - either the National Union (Inara Murniece) or the United List (Raymonds Bergmanis). The current head of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Commission, Inara Murniece, has experience leading the Ministry of Defense (in the Karins government), and the chairman of the Saeima Defense and Internal Affairs Commission, Raymonds Bergmanis, once held the position of minister of defense. It is clear that, given the extremely short term of the new government's powers (from 5 to 7 months - until the new Saeima approves the next government), an experienced politician should be appointed to such an important position, preferably one who already has access to state secrets. Both of the aforementioned candidates have such access.
